A day before the PlayStation Showcase goes down and Sony is already making news! Sony Interactive Entertainment has acquired UK developer Firesprite Games, the newest addition to the stable of PlayStation Studios.

If you haven’t been paying attention, Firesprite Games originally formed after the closure of Studio Liverpool. Members of the team worked on the WipEout series in the past, so the working relationship with PlayStation was already in place.

A couple years ago they released The Persistence on the PSVR, which eventually went multiplatform as it also offered a non-VR mode. A current-gen upgrade for the game is free for all owners of the game. They also assisted Team Asobi with The Playroom titles on the PS4.

With a team of over 250 (and growing!), Firesprite is bigger than UK studios such as Rocksteady, Rare, and is bigger than Media Molecule and London Studio combined. This is a major acquisition for SIE. The best part of all? This quote from Herman Hulst from GamesIndustry.biz:

PlayStation Studios teams are culturally very diverse from one another. There is overlap, there is always that commitment to quality, there is always that collaboration… but the experiences that you can expect [from Firesprite] will be quite different from the teams that you are familiar with at PlayStation Studios. And I like that. I think that our audiences, our community, deserves very rich and very different experiences. At the end of the day, that’s what makes us stronger.

As much as I loved the beautiful, deep, open-world games from PlayStation Studios last-gen, I’m ready for the more diverse portfolio this generation. While the PS3 might have stumbled out the gaming gate, it rebounded with one massive library of PlayStation exclusives across across almost genres of gaming. This is what I’m hoping the PlayStation 5 will have in the end.

What is Firesprite Games working on? They were once hiring for a massive multiplayer shooter and a dark, narrative blockbuster adventure title. So welcome to the PlayStation family, Firesprite, we can’t wait to see what they bring to the portfolio.
