The well documented slow sales of the PS5 in Japan was a cause of concern for some fans. Pointing to a possible decreasing interest in the platform in the east. However, thanks to the recent arrival of new stock in PlayStation’s home country, the PS5 is now outpacing its predecessor.

This bit of information comes to us by way of Famitsu. According to the site, the PS5 has now sold more than 689,000 units in Japan. For comparison sake, the PS4 had surpassed 648,000 units sold during the same time window. This timeframe being about 25 weeks on the market.

Sony recently revealed the PS5 had surpassed 7.8 million units sold globally as of March 31, 2021. Which, when taken within the context of supply restraints and semiconductor shortages, the number’s extremely impressive. Especially, when you take into account the PS5 is outpacing the PS4’s global sales during its first 5 months on the market.
